The exhibition programme will be accompanied by a series of monthly talks and conversations at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which has begun in January 2012. Leading international and Austrian artists, museum curators, collectors and critics will be invited to speak about their own work and projects, and their relationship with the museum's historical collections. Talks will be held in both German and English.
The first in this series of artist talks was held in early January 2012 and featured the renowned American artist Jeff Koons in conversation. In February we invited Martin Gayford, art critic and author of a biography on Lucian Freud.
He was followed in March 2012 by the photographer Nan Goldin. In April the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone spoke about his exhibition at the Theseus Temple, and in June the Belgian artist Kris Martin about his show at the same venue. The talk with Ed Ruscha and Lawrence Weiner in September was a particular highlight and coincided with the opening of the exhibition curated by Ed Ruscha at the KHM.
In February 2013 the British artist Jenny Saville was invited to give a talk. In May the German photographer Thomas Demand gave a talk and in September curator Hope Kingsley spoke about the relations between photography and Old Master paintings. In November, David Dawson, long-term assistant and friend of Lucian Freud, gave a talk on the occasion of the exhibiton.
Our first talk in 2014 was held by the British artist and writer Edmund de Waal in January. It was followed by a talk with Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, in March and the American artist John Currin in May.
