Lucian Freud

For the first time in Austria!

The Kunsthistorisches Museum presents an exhibition of paintings by Lucian Freud (1922 – 2011) for the first time in Austria. The selection of works was made with the close personal involvement of the artist, a grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, during the months prior to his death in July 2011, and with his longtime assistant David Dawson.

The exhibition presents a survey of Freud’s entire working career, a period of almost 70 years, and includes many of his most important and well-known paintings. A specific intention of the exhibition is to explore Freud’s lifelong interest in historical art, and in sculpture dating back to Egyptian antiquity.

Major loans from museums across the world will be on display, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Tate, London, and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, in addition to others belonging to some of Freud’s most important private collectors and patrons.

The exhibition is curated by Jasper Sharp.

In addition, the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna will present concurrently an exhibition of photographs by Freud’s longtime assistant David Dawson titled “Lucian Freud: In Private”.
