Emperor Leopold I

1695, Artist: Paul Strudel

Emperor Leopold I

Paul Strudel created this series of busts for Leopold I’s brother-in-law, Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, and his residence in Düsseldorf. The result so completely met the imperial conceptions of dynastic representation, however, that Leopold I acquired these five busts himself and only had that of the Elector sent to Düsseldorf. Paul Strudel was named court sculptor shortly thereafter.
