The Premonstratensian monk’s vision of his betrothal to Mary was the apotheosis of his marked veneration of the Virgin Mary. Deep affection, devotion and emotion are to be found in the posture, gestures and countenance of the kneeling monk. In contrast Mary seems distanced, aloof and cool. The smiling angel, its arm and shoulder uncovered, assumes the role of intermediary both in terms of composition and content. All emotion seems to be focused on his swirling robe.
