Die Vasenmalerei des 7. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. ist von starken orientalisierenden Einflüssen geprägt. Neue Motive aus der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt verdrängten die geometrische Ornamentik. Die führende Rolle Athens wurde von Korinth übernommen, weitere Zentren entstanden in Ostgriechenland. Die nach dem Hauptfundgebiet der Gefäße dieser Gattung so benannte rhodische Kanne gibt von der Ausbildung dieses Stils im griechischen Osten eine gute Vorstellung: Umlaufende Tierfriese (Sphinx und Greife, Hunde und Hasen) sowie Ornamentstreifen mit Flechtbändern und Lotosblüten überziehen die weiße Fläche des Gefäßkörpers. Der aus geschlossenen Silhouetten und Umrisszeichnung gemischte Malstil, die Überlängung der figürlichen Motive und die reiche Füllornamentik verleihen der Keramik einen besonderen Reiz.
