Halber Prunkharnisch mit Harnischröckchen, sog. Hochzeitsharnisch, Erzherzog Ferdinand von Tirol (1529-1595)

The grand all’antica or alla romana armour was made for Archduke Ferdinand II’s. wedding to Anna Caterina Gonzaga in 1582. The lions’ heads on the shoulders and the hanging flaps are typical features of this style, which is modelled on antiquity and the armour worn by Roman emperors. They were initially produced in Milan from around 1530 and then in other European armourers workshop centres. The wearer was thus able to pose as a heroic figure. With this suit of armour, Ferdinand could emulate his legendary Roman predecessor: the Trojan hero, Aeneas.
