Bust of a youthful king

2nd /1st century BC or 1st century AD; , from Alexandria

Bust of a youthful king

This likeness combines Egyptian and Hellenistic features. The ruler is depicted as a pharaoh with nemes-headcloth and uraeus-serpent at his brow. In ancient Egypt, the braided side-lock is a feature typical for representations of children; here it refers to the youth of the king. Facial features and the fringe of curls are indicative of Greek influence.
