Head from a statue of Isis

Beginning in the second century BC, long corkscrew curls became the characteristic hairstyle of the goddess Isis and deified queens. The profile here is Greek but the back pillar which once extended up into the tresses of the wig belongs to Egyptian tradition. A headdress – probably Isis’s cow horns with sun disk – was once attached to the top of the head.
