Die doppelseitig bemalte Tafel bildete ursprünglich den linken Flügel eines kleinen Altars. Bosch verlegt die Szene in die eigene Gegenwart, um dem Betrachter die Schlechtigkeit der Welt vor Auge zu führen. Aller Ausdruck des Bösen ist in die Grimassen der Schergen gelegt, ein neues psychologischer Moment erscheint damit in der Malerei. Das Kind mit Laufstuhl und Windrad auf der Rückseite der Tafel wurde verschieden gedeutet, als Jesuskind oder als Allegorie des Unverstandes, auffallend ist jedenfalls der Kontrast seiner Unschuld zu der Gemeinheit der Passionsszene.
