The Imperial Collections of the Habsburgs
KUNSTHISTORISCHES MUSEUM
Magnificent architecture and breathtaking master pieces from Titian to Rubens in the world famous picture gallery!
The Emperor Franz Joseph built the Kunsthistorisches Museum to house the imperial collections. Its breath-taking treasures make it one of the most important museums in the world. Unique masterpieces by Rubens, Rembrandt, Raphael, Vermeer, Velazquez, Titian and Durer, as well as the world’s largest collection of works by Pieter Bruegel the elder, make a visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum an unforgettable experience. Equally enjoyable for every art-lover is the magnificent building itself with its imposing staircase featuring a series of paintings on which Gustav Klimt collaborated.
IMPERIAL TREASURY
The golden treasures of the Habsburgs
The oldest part of the Hofburg Palace, the Schweizerhof, houses the unrivalled treasures of the Habsburgs, among them the Austrian imperial crown, and the crown and insignia of the Holy Roman Empire. Other highlights include the golden cradle of Napoleon’s son, the treasure of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and the extant holdings of the sumptuous 15th century treasure of the Dukes of Burgundy.
Also on show are charming pieces of jewellery once worn by Habsburg empresses and princesses, and pieces formerly in the possession of the Empress Elisabeth.
IMPERIAL CARRIAGE MUSEUM
The golden imperial coaches and the carriages and personal possessions of Empress Elisabeth of Austria
The Imperial Carriage Museum near Schönbrunn Palace – also part of the Habsburg collections – houses a magnificent collection of imperial carriages and sleighs. Of particular importance are the opulent baroque Imperial Coach, one of Napoleon’s wedding carriages, and the carriages once used by the Empress Elisabeth. The latter are shown with carefully selected objects documenting the life of the Empress, among them her only extant saddle and one of her resplendent court dresses with a long train.
