Wiederkehr der Astraea Salvator Rosa | um 1640/1645
Astraea, the Goddess of Justice, returns to earth and hands over her attributes (scales and sword) to the friendly peasants. A new Golden Age has dawned: with this myth which stretches back to Virgil, the Florentine ruling class of the Medicis time and again wished to re-establish its regime. This painting, which Salvator Rosa carried out for the Medici court, also resonates with a yearning for peace after the end of the 30 Years' War. |
