Portrait of a Man
(Terris-Portrait)

oil on wood, 30 x 26 cm
inscription on the back: „15.. di man, de M°Zorzi da Castel fr...“
California, San Diego Museum of Art

The painting now in San Diego was first analysed and discussed by art historians in the 19th century after it was discovered in the collection of the English collector, Davis Curror. In the early 20th century it was in the collection of Alexander Terris in England - from whom it has derived its name - before being presented to the San Diego Museum of Art by an anonymous benefactor in December 1941. The portrait is almost unanimously accepted as an autograph work, though there is little consensus about the identity of the sitter and about the inscription on the back and the work's dating, as the two last digits of the inscribed date are illegible.
