The inscription "ANTONIVS BRO(KAR)DVS MARII[…]“ seems to suggest that the sitter is the poet and lawyer, Antonio Brocardo. However, this identification is contradicted by the dating of the painting. It alternates between 1503 and 1530. Style, portrait type, fashion of dress and hairstyle suggest that the painting was executed in the early 1510's. At that time, Brocardo was no more than 12-15 years old; the sitter is clearly much older. Today the inscription is regarded as a later addition.
