The Warrior

canvas, 72 x 56,5 cm
Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum

We are confronted by a half-length figure in profile looking to the right; he is dressed in armour and sports a wreath of laurels like a Roman Emperor. This, however, is contrasted by his equipment, because our hero is wearing only very simple half-armour, then worn by ordinary men-at-arms. The halberd behind him on the left is another indication that he is a soldier who fights on foot; he was probably a member of the guards, or perhaps even a commander of the guards, who may have achieved some exceptional feat. He is looking into the distance and not at the other figure - badly damaged and thus difficult to identiy - who has placed her or his hand on that of the warrior.
